What do you overlay wayrock with? in the
Tiling Forum at TilersForums;
Hi all,
Having not brought myself up to date with the various options available, I am still overlaying chipboard floors with plywood....
What do you use to overlay before tiling, ... -

In exactly the same manner you would use ply SR?
Call me old fashioned, but I can't help but think that ply has more rigidity

Re: What do you overlay wayrock with?
backer boards wont add strength but they give a better surface to tile too. The original floor still need to be free of deflection 1st, as for fixing both products are fixed slightly different. Hardibacker is fixed with tile adhesive and screws while No More Ply is fixed with its own Mega Strength Polyurthene adhesive in a tube....and its very sticky and then a few screws to act as a clamping system while the adhesive sets.

Re: What do you overlay wayrock with?
So in laymans terms:
If you've got a brand new first floor wayrock floor, which is flat and pretty damn solid - would you go over it with HBB or NMP instead of plywood, thus providing you with a better surface than wayrock to adhere to?
-
-
Re: What do you overlay wayrock with?
Yup you got it
-
-
Re: What do you overlay wayrock with?
Where have you found to be the cheapest for HBB?

Re: What do you overlay wayrock with?
Even though it does not state this on the hardi site......you lay hardi backer 250 and then walk on the floor.. you can deffo feel it is more rigid...IMO..

Re: What do you overlay wayrock with?
I havent actually, only used Hardi twice and that was because it was supplied. I use No More Ply as thats what i can get easily.

Call me set in my ways, but can't help thinking this stuff would be 'spongy' if you know what I mean???
I am all for new, quicker techniques - but am a bit nervous with this one...
What thickness would you put on new wayrock?

Yes always thought that myself but seeing as no one will actually state that from these manufacturers its always best to say it doesnt add strength...saying that though i see it as when you add any form of layer which is firmly adhered to the sub floor it must add some strength as its basically laminating the floor.

Re: What do you overlay wayrock with?
It is a solid cement board....no foam core..just cement board...i use loads of it now and never overlay with ply...

Which one do you use Dave??
I'm tied to Topps or TG for a supplier, so need to find out which is tried and tested..

Re: What do you overlay wayrock with?
I personally think wood products should be banned when tiling. The price of timber these days will soon outweigh the costs of the likes of Hardi etc.

Me too Dave, the last time i used 18mm ply was only due to teh fact that it wasnt my job and we did have a height issue in where we needed extra depth so it wasnt a problem but i would rather not tile to wood ever again.

Lets say i have too..then it is only if the joists are overlayed with 22mm plus ply because of height issues...then i use Dural Ci or ditra..for expansion issues...or if no height issues, then hardi...never tile to wood now...Houses are that warm now and the expansion is a killer for tile joints..

Re: What do you overlay wayrock with?
Do you still fix these boards with tile adhesive onto wayrock?? not a very reliable bond at all.....

The adhesive is to fill any voids under the boards and then you screw the boards down every 200mm....

Re: What do you overlay wayrock with?
OK lads - I've now ordered 10 sheets of the 6mm thick Hardie backerboard for a job next week, but Topps did not have any of the HBB screws in stock
Anybody used normal galvanised screws or is there something special about the HBB ones, do they have washers built on?
Also, what size serator do you use to fix them down with and is the adhesive mix a wet one?
