i would advise on ripping up the old ones as any job,you can't guarentee someone elses work before you,for all you know the old vinyl tiles might be close to de-bonding,you are as well doing it properly first time!

The only problem with taking up the old lino tiles is the mess you will have left!
You will need to self level the floor and make sure it is as smooth as a babies **M - then leave it to dry - prime and fix tiles.
The peel and stick tiles are a short term cover up product so you will probably get a good 6 months out of them before they all lift.

cheers lads, some good points there. think i'll end up ripping out the existing lino tiles. but need to replace with something long lasting, not just a quick fix. is there a lino tile that is better quality than the peel and stick type?

    Hi,

The first job I am going to attempt will involve taking up old lino tiles. The council appear to have stuck them down with the the strongest superglue known to man. Underneath is this black backing stuff. Would I self level over that or try and dig it up?

    cheers

Sorry jay, i meant to say that. Yes it is concrete underneath.

I guess the only way of getting it up is with a hammer and chisel !?!

Just make certain it is concrete and not Magnesite - Council Houses were often screeded with Magnesite in the 50's and 60's - if magnesite it will be pinkish or greenish in colour. It will give an off the scale reading with a damp meter whether fully dry or not.

I think I read somewhere that a heat gun was good for loosening the glue left after removing vinyl. Never tried it myself though.
