Hi,

When plying over chipboard (18mm) has the ply got to be marineply or can the ordinary cheaper ply suffice if sealed with balbond? When sealing the boards on the underside and sides, does it need to dry out first or can it be fixed immediately to the floor.

do you need to allow any gaps between the boards and around the perimeter of the room.

When I suggest to a customer about plying and I say it should be 15 mm they always say thats a bit high? Are there any products anyone can recommend for bridging the different heights in the door threshold?

Im thinking of either 9mm or 12mm with single part adhesive or 6mm and fasflex to keep the floor height low. After reading threads on here I don't trust going direct onto chipboard, not with a large format ceramic tile.

Anyones comments or what they would suggest on this would be much appreciated.

hi steve mate if the height is an issue... you could try backer boards these will give you a much lower finished floor height....here's a little video on installation.....dave..

I'll second the b/b's, gets you down to 6mm.

12mm b/board and rapid flex,or 6mm b/board and fastflex.Personally I would just prime boards in apd and go straight onto it with fastflex,w/j grout with GT1

thanks everyone for the tip on backer board, seen the stuff before but never thought of it . cheers too David for the video link. really useful

do you always screw it as well as bed with adhesive, what notch do you use?
Where can I obtain it from and how much is it in comparrison to ply?
What sort of cost per square metre do tilers charge on average to fix ply or backer board.

you will get it in most diy centres but i think topps is the best place to get it........i usaully use wickes as no topps in my area yet.....about £11 a sheet ...1200x600mm.

just a thinset trowel and screw it down with galvanised screws or brass ones...

its no harder to fit than ply so about the same cost to fix...

I charge a minimum of a halfday rate for it, I know pretty much to the minute how long it'll take to knock out, I dont do it in mtr as obviously some areas are easier to fit than others. ANd apparently our daily rates vary massively up n down the country from £100 p/d to £200 p/d.
