Re: silicone(lack of!)
what a good thread, to all the tilers that grout their corners thinking that it will make siliconing easier, dont do it, silicone has a role to perform and it is not to hide your grouting, leave it out of corner joints and if you seriously cannot silicone then hold your hand up and get someone who can, if you want to learn then you will.
May the fairy liquid be with you.
Amen.... hic...sorry

Re: silicone(lack of!)
I always use silicone on all internal corners, tile to tile/tile to bath showertray, tile to work top etc, if its white being used then i use dow corning, if its coloured silicone then i use the mapai silicone,
But when im doing tile to celing i use a good quality waterproof decorators caulk, This is so when the ceilings are painted in the future they can paint right up to the edge of the tiles..
But you do see alot of jobs where there is no silicone present and they have just filled it with grout which just cracks away after time and it doesent leave any expansion.
Or they have used clear silicone over the top of the grout which is a waiste of time!!

Remember to always pull the silicone and not push it.

Hi gooner, I have tiled a couple of swimming pools, but this was about 12 years ago I was working with a pool contractor in guernsey, we diddnt use silicone on pools either, everything was grouted!! The adhesive and grout was arditex and we did put alot of addys in.
As you are experienced in the tiling of pools why is there no need to use silicone on the internal corners? is this because the substrate is the same all the way around and if there is any movement that it would all move at the same rate?
Does the chemicals in the water affect the silicone?
I never thought to ask when i was helping with the pool tiling..
just a matter of personal interest thanks steve...

Re: silicone(lack of!)
As TJ mentioned...for those that are rubbish at free hand siliconing then use Cornertape.

Re: silicone(lack of!)
I always silicone internal corners in every corner not just the shower area corner , if the top needs doing round the ceiling use decorators caulk so it can be painted in future , round bathroom and kitchen windows its the same decorators caulk not silicone

Re: silicone(lack of!)
yes steve the chemicals in the water discolour the silicon and break it down

Re: silicone(lack of!)
i have just printed off this thread to show a customer who has complained that i siliconed all internal joints in their wet room shower upstairs above their kitchen apparently they have been in loads of bathrooms and never seen this done before and their decorator says its not nesscessary as grout is waterproof and the corners should be grouted , the sales assistant where they bought the tiles told them it wasnt needed too ,I couldnt be bothered to argue with them to be honest, just said i would be happy to remove the silicone but would ask them to sign a statement stating that i had installed it but they asked me to remove it and went against my recommendations in doing so, some people do my head in
