I have a client that wants me to tile over existing tiles with 600 x 300 x 12 mm travertine. Two of the walls are external (brick) the other two are plasterboard stud. What do you think adhesive wise and preperation, he is insistent that the old tiles cannot be removed. Cheers.

Wouldn't fancy it myself. That is one heavy tile. So you know that two walls are brick and two are plasterboard stud. Do you know that these walls haven't had a plaster skim. If any plaster then safe weight goes down to 20kg per square metre. I suspect that these travertine weigh around 30-35 kg per square metre on their own.

Preparation - rip everything off. Check tiles aren't too heavy for plasterboard. If so go for aqua panel.

Adhesive - white, flexible cement based adhesive.

If I was in your shoes I would walk away from the job if the customer wouldn't take my advice...which would be to remove all tiles and reboard if needed..guess who will be at fault if the tiles where to pull from the wall and it won't be the customers.

Go back and try to get him to let you remove and prep correctly if he won't...walk away and let someone else take the chance.

Remove tiles and board out as mcp77 says with aquapanels srewed and plugged for extra strength.....otherwise dont touch it ..too much weight...
