Re: slate onto upstairs toilet floor
hey stingray
I'm not sure that roof slate would be thick enough and strong enough to walk on to be honest. I'm sure there was a similar thread about a similar topic not too long ago. I'll see if I can find it for you.
I can't imagine that roof slates were designed to take the weight of a human being
here you go:

cnt see the fireplace being a problen mate, but im thinking tha with roof slates as they get too the edges of the tiles they get very brittle and if there is heavy traffic going over them it will only be a matter of time before the corners and edges start 2 break, maybe im wrong but thats my thought.

Re: slate onto upstairs toilet floor
I'd have a go at trying to snap them in your hands. If you can break them with your hands, just imagine what entire body weight might do.

Re: slate onto upstairs toilet floor
I really wouldnt want to be putting roof tiles on the floor - as a few others have said, they are not strong enough, will be too brittle around the edges and over time you are asking for trouble

Re: slate onto upstairs toilet floor
Thickness looks fine and 10mm is ok....but you will have some sizing of the stone to do as timeless john has already stated ...But i think it could look nice....sort of random layed pattern...
You will need to check for strength of the floor though...and prep as required.

Re: slate onto upstairs toilet floor
i was thinking of doing random design, would that be the best idea or try and cut them into squares.
there is some tile that are more than 20mm thick!!
the tiles came of an old cottage home. l would say they are years old.
they do look pretty strong though
i will lay some pieces out flat 2moro and take some pics and then see what yous think of them!!
thanks

Re: slate onto upstairs toilet floor
If i was to make a suggestion it would either be to cut them into strips of 50mm width and random lengths and fix them exactly as the flooring is at present.
Or to cut them into tiles of 200x75mm and fix them in a Herringbone pattern - at 45degrees not square.

Re: slate onto upstairs toilet floor
i thought that they looked like burlington blue, a super quality roof slate, and provided you use a solid bed method, should be fine for foot traffic. If you have access to a wet cutter, that's the best way to cut them

l dont have a wetsaw, l have a grinder with a good blade in it ( diatech )
l like the idea of the random lengths. think that would look very good!!

Re: slate onto upstairs toilet floor
Would have to be done on a wet machine with pre set gauge!
As I said - not a job for a novice, but with the right info - certainly do able.

Re: slate onto upstairs toilet floor
2 mtrs of floor space....
Check for deflection and fasten the floor down as much as you can.. then over lay with hardi backer 250....Then using a thick bed flexible adhesive and starting with the thicker pieces bed them down on a solid bed and work back to the thinner 10mm ones...
keeping them free from adhesive drying on them as you work...you can clean them before laying to get the moss etc off them then clean again after laying, so they are nice and clean ready for sealing with an inpregnator...i think a topical sealer will spoil the look if you make them shiny finish but thats what i think will look good but the finish is up to you...then once sealed you can grout with a grout suitable for the width of the joints, so make sure the joints are laid no wider than your chosen grout will cope with...
Once grouted and washed off then leave to dry...might haze up a bit then clean again..once clean and dry you can give another coat of sealer...
good luck and can't wait for the finished pics...
