Default Newbie after advice

HiGuys

I did a week tiling course lastweek with the view to going into it full time. However i want to do a few jobs on the side first to build up some confidence.

I have a kitchen floor to do which i have removed the lino on, toreveal what looks like a hardboard base. Is it fine to tile onto this or do i still need to ply it as i was taught?

Thank you in advance

Jason

Well if i was doing the job i would probably remove the hard board then ply it (15mm ply to be on the safe side) ....But if the hardboard is solid and no movement or bowing then just put 12mm ply over it ...you have to make sure the floor is solid so deffo ply it either way mate... wait for a few more posts as this is my opinion and i've just started out myself

Thanks for advice
I dont think removing it is an option cos it runs under all the kitchen units. Its a relatively new built house so im only guessing its hardboard-not really sure what they use. It does seem solid though. You still think i need to ply over it anyway? Just concerned with raising the floor that much....

Not knowing what the job "hardboard" or boarding looks like it's making it difficult to advise on what to do...however some of the more experience tilers on this forum will understand exactly the boarding you are on about and will advise approppiatly....however it does sound as if the boarding is solid enough for tiling....i would still ply it yes but use 12mm instead of 15...
please wait for more relplies..

Some would just tile straight on the hardboard. If I remember rightly there is a certain type of hardboard in new houses that it "OK" to tile straight onto. I think it has a green colour to it.

Personally I would still ply it out as Steve said. Better to be safe than sorry!

Gaz

PS If you wait till a bit later the more experience tilers will be about an they really know there stuff!

Thanks again guys

The board is like a grey in colour and is lvel and solid. Is it purely a movement thing that would be the possible problem by not plying it? Also, i understand that i would need to pva it as normal, but then do i need to prime it as well?

overboard with 12mm ply prime the rear and sides of ply with a acrilic primer such as bal apd (dont use pva) screw down at 30cm centres no need to prime face of ply then tile with single part flex and grout with flexable grout such as bal superflex (happy days )

You cannot tile onto hard board as this is a compressed paper product and will just swell with the moisture from the adhesive etc.. It is easy to remove as it will just snap off at the unit legs .. so remove and ply out with 12mm ply....prime edges and back of ply with bal bond sbr neat and screw down every 300mm.....
