Default Where to place border tiles?

    Hi,

I'm hoping someone can give advice on what height to place border tiles.

I've chosen inexpensive 20 x 25 ceramic tiles for the bathroom, which I hope to dress up with an interlocking tile border. Would it be a good idea to set the border under the lower edge of the window, or better to set it higher? The bathroom is not particularly large (2.9m x 1.7m). Would a particular height placement of the border tiles help to make the room look larger?

Many thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

    Hello and welcome.....

Some times placing the border higher , like picture rail height looks good in a small room...but it is personal choice really...

Just done a picture rail ht one which looked good, because if it had been 'middle ish) you wouldn't have seen half of it for windows, shower etc
Also just done two vertical borders above a bath which broke the wall up nicely,

normally try to put it under the window as a sill or inside be careful not to compromise top and bottom cuts just to put the border where you want it you dont want slither cuts floor or on the ceiling also take into account shower base height and the bath sometimes its a case of a happy medium

try to put borders about eye level nowadays or vertical as it's a change from 1/2 way up the wall, which personally i think looks old fashioned now

eye level is popular here though dado looks well as long as its not in the middle cutting the room in half

Tilly - We are assuming that you are fully tiling the bathroom!
As earlier replies it is a personal choice and about 1.2mts(4feet) is good and so is picture rail height. However the modern trend is vertical lines which can define the seperate areas of the bathroom.
If its half tiled the norm is approx 1.2 (4feet) and is on the top row of tiling - but other factors such as window cill height and cuts to bath/floor etc have to be considered.

Yes, I am planning to fully tile. The previous half-tiling had a border at 1.2 but I thought it might look better just under the window sill at 1.03, where it would remain unbroken (except for the shower rigid riser) all around the room, including between the top of the vanity basin and the bottom of a wall/mirror unit. I was just a bit concerned, though, that it might visually diminish the height of the room (2.4) by placing it as low as that.

I appreciate all the input on this. I also have some queries about adhesive and grout, but perhaps I should post those under another title?

My two penneth is that this type of choice is very personal and an element of "design"

My brutal opinion is that I dont like to see any borders.

But for a break in pattern then I like to see feature panels.

Feature panels are blocks of tiles (usually floor to ceiling) that break a space and define an area. They are usually in a contrast colour and tile size. They can be used to highlight a section of wall, a feature like a shower cubical or a towel rail.

The tiles dont have to be expensive to create a wow factor.

Please remember these are just personal opinions offered.
