Botch job yet again !!
Hello people,
I got a call on friday night, the guy told me " joe, sorry for ringing you.I had intended getting you in to tile my house, you done a great job for my mother and fathers last year.Anyway my wife to be(in 4 weeks time) has a cousin who can tile and who was out of work so we let him do it.He finished a 7pm tonight but i'm not so happy and would like a second opinion.
To cut to the chase now i was working extremely close to his house on sat morning so i called !!!
Total mess, i walked through the front door.Polished porcelain 600x300 laid landscape in straight rows, staggered joints galore, lips beyond 2 mm in places and up to 5 in a couple too !!! grout not formed in the joints proper, and left on in places, very badly washed(obviously no washboy).some tiles hollow beneath, radiator slips not put in just grouted and some not,he didn't even tile under washing machine, tumble dryer, cooker !! I didn't want to be cheeky and take pics, the tiler charged him £10 per hour, the floor was 27m2,it took from monday 8am to fri 7pm to finish it,i gave him a price for lifting them, levelling floor and retiling with nice herringbone pattern! i'll know this week if i have it,poor man.
This is the sort of thing that is going on out there, when will people learn?

He genuinley was sincere in saying that this guy was in trouble with no work i think,he also asked me to go and tile a new office in his fathers car business. So people do funny things,i was shocked walking on it,it had the worst of everything.

Re: Botch job yet again !!
I don't even know the guy who tiled it,not yet anyway. I was in my local tile shop trying to source him a real good deal as a replacement and they even wanted to know who he was !!!! I have him a great deal on tiles, slc and addy etc,it will lighten the blow on him a bit but not sweet when he has to do it twice, the only good point is that the tiler hasn't been paid for the floor yet,he has done the bathroom and ensuite but i didn't see them.

Re: Botch job yet again !!
Well Joe,
I have been in the exact same situation myself, the cowboys are coming out of the woodwork, especially as the downturn in work has left alot of tradesmen claiming that they are handy and could tackle anything. One thing that fuels the cowboys out there is the running of DIY courses at night that give people the impression that they are going to learn enough to get them started in there own tiling business. Im am not involved in these courses for this reason but just as a point of fact i know that some colleges are employing brick laying lecturers to deliver these courses and they know little or nothing about how to even give these deluded people any sort of correct info.
