Tile on tiles
I know it is best to remove tiles and then tile away .However I would be holding up the plumber if I do this so. I just wanted to check with u guys that it is indeed ok to tile on top of the tiles that are already fixed?
I can remove the tiles on the other walls as they will not slow the plumber down. The chance's are that the wall will need prepared to give me a decent surface to tile. I was thinking of either -
1 - dot and dap chip rock.then prime +tile
2 - Dont remove tiles and fix a false wall then prime+ tile
3 - Prime walls and tile and do the best I can.
What would be the best ?
It has to be someting that allows me to tile a day or 2 after fixing the walls.
thanks

Re: Tile on tiles
Good afternoon Andy.
IMO it is always best to take off any old tiling and prepare the walls for the new tiling.
I wouldn't let holding up a plumber result in not being able to prepare a job in the correct manner.
It is not ideal to give advice without seeing the job and not knowing how well fixed the tiles are a present on the walls - whether fixed with adhesive or sand/cement and onto stud walls or rendered.
The main issue is do you think that the tiles on now will take the weight of the new tiling - are the new tiles to be larger/heavier etc.
I haven't a clue why you'd consider options 1 or 2 (whatever chip rock is!) but i've never spent more than half a day taking tiles off a bathroom and another day to make ready for tiling.
Its all about preparation!
Have fun.
John.

Re: Tile on tiles
Thanks Timeless. Point taken.
I take it that I may then need to smooth of the walls for the damage done from taken of the tiles.? What do u normally do? Skim them?
It might well be that they r fine and I can tile away.

Re: Tile on tiles
Andy.
I usually carry in the van an extra bag of fast set powder adhesive to fill any holes or missing plaster.
Unless there is serious damage to the walls you can use the levels of what's left on and you should have no problem making good.
Always tap the walls at the estimate stage (with your knuckles) and you'll get a good indication of how well fixed they are.

Re: Tile on tiles
Hi Andy, tend to agree with T.J. Dont allow the plumber to rush you. cant see him taking any flack from your client if their not happy with your tiling!
Best of luck.

Re: Tile on tiles
agree with the above comments......have never come across a plumber yet that has rushed his part of the job so that i can do mine....tiling on top of tiles can be done but not the best option so id strip them off and prep wall properly.

Re: Tile on tiles
yeh mate,
sod the plumber...he wouldn't cut corners for you or think twice about whether or not he's holding you up...what if you did tile over tile and in a few months time there's problems because of it? Who would get slated you or the pushy plumber??
Make him wait and do it right
