    Default Jolly Mastic Help

    Hi there
I'm new to this so hello and thanks in advance to all you wonderful people out there. Have learned such a lot already (too late in some cases).

Anyway, just laid a silver travertine floor in the bathroom. Not sure what happened but think the plumber was on it too soon and I have a large crack along a vein in two tiles. I appreciate that the whole lot should probably come up (no uncoupling membrane used) but I haven't got time just now for one reason and another. Will redo in 6 months using the tips I've found on here. However, need a quick fix for now.

Have managed to buy Jolly Mastic and am going to give it a go. No instructions came with it and I'm unsure what quantities of filler and paste I should use. The tin's 1000ml (much too big!) and filler the size of small tube of toothpaste.

Any help would be much appreciated.

    Hi
    Thanks for your response.
No written instructions on tin or tube. There are a couple of pictures on the tin but not sure what they mean. Looks like 100% of tin (?) and 2-3% of tube. However, this isn't ideal. Don't really want to use the whole litre tin when 50ml will hopefully do the job.
    Any other help gratefully received.

    Hi andrea..

    Found some instructions for you...

    Instructions for use:

    • Make sure that surfaces to be glued are perfectly dry and clean;
    • Mix the product properly
    • Take from the tin the needed quantity of mastic using clean tools
    • Add 2-4 grams of hardener for each 100 grams of product
    • Mix and amalgamate the two components properly
    • Apply JOLLY (r) on the surface to be glued or filled, considering that the glue hardens after about twenty minutes; hardening time will shorten at temperatures higher than 20°C and will increase at lower temperatures
    • Do not put back in the tin hardened and unused mastic in order to avoid deteriorating the entire contents of the same
    • After use, close the tin to avoid hardening of the glue on contact with air.

    You're a superstar. That'll be a great help. Thanks.
While I'm here, any other tips for the travertine. I take it it's really soft? I've put a roll top bath on top and can sense more of a disaster coming on! As I said, I will have to replace but can't right now. Would like to be prepared for next time round because this has been an expensive mistake.
    It looked so good too!

As long as you have a solid bed fix under the tiles then the roll top will be fine...

Did you overboard the floor first..?

Yes, overboarded first (not sure if with the right stuff but it was pretty substantial). The adhesive was premixed flexible formula. From research on here, would I have been better with two part stuff? It took ages to set and then the plumber was on it with his tools and I think it was too soon, possibly why cracked along some veins. Would you recommend uncoupling membrane next time round?

Yes it was tubbed and flexible - is this not right? The tiles were also laid directly onto the adhesive and I'm sure I read they should have been 'back buttered'?
Sorry if I sound a bit dim - all new to me, I'm afraid
    Thanks again

I'll try and dig out the tub and report back. In the meantime, if you have the time to put down a checklist for me to follow next time round, i'd be eternally grateful. Don't want to be making costly mistakes twice! Just a thought, but is there any chance tiles could be defective? Can you recommend a reputable silver travertine dealer. It looks so good and the rest of the bathroom has been tailored around that so I will want the same again.
Thanks again for your invaluable help and patience.
    Andrea

Will check him out, thanks, and will come back to you re the tubbed adhesive for your thoughts. (Sorry, should adhesive have been flexible stuff? I do have a couple of tiles left and wonder if I should try and remove cracked ones and redo. That'll be a nightmare, I'm sure!)

No they don't. I just looked. So I've been given some duff info (couldn't find the tub so had to ask the tiler). I bought all the other stuff myself so I know it's BAL and for the right purpose. Need to investigate further, me thinks, because this could be my problem.
