Default Help! - Is 40mm to short on a brickbond wrap around

    Hi guys,

I'm finally ready to start tiling today and have made a staff marked with my tile widths and grout lines.

It looks like i'll have only 40mm on one row that will wrap around to the adjacent wall. The tiles are 400mm wide...do you think 40mm is too small of a wrap around and would I be better off continuing on the next wall with a new tile instead?

The other row is fine and i'll have just over half that which will wrap around.

    Cheers

On the pic below, the shorter cuts that wrap around on to the next wall are only 40mm:

hi i think i know what you mean looking at the drawing diagram a move tiles over tostart full off door jamb ;wall b you just need to change bond to suit wall a ;wall c try to go full tile from adjorning corner might throw window out but try it on the computer( easier to set out room on job but thats not gonna happen)

MMmmmm, I see what your doing, each tile that cuts into a corner your using to continue onto the next wall, am I right ? Interesting, I don't do that, I work out my cuts to give the biggest available cut on each row, yes it uses more tiles but I think the end result makes up for the extra cost, in Visio, I think it is your using, how does the layout work if you were to move the set out to the left so tha the cuts on the right hand side of the door ( 40mm ish ) as we're looking are no longer needed ?

I also wouldnt use the offcuts to start the next wall, it would be very hard to get it right everywhere and what if your walls were not plumb?
set out each wall and if yourfirst row ended with a tile less than half, start off the next wall with a row that begins with a tile more than a half.

Remember with brickbond you can centre your tiles on a line equal to one quarter of the width af your tiles( so for a 400 tile centre it at a mark 100 in) This will still give you equal cuts on each side, but on alternate rows.

40mm will look like a slither, and be pain to fix

reset the wall so that you have more than half the tile to start And it wil look fine

It seems to work better if I set out each wall individually and not carry on the offcuts on to the next wall.

By setting out individually I can ensure there are good cuts on both the corners. I will post a pic of a new layout shortly.

My personal opinion is that visually it looks better when its carried on around the wall as you did originally but i can see the problem and 40mm is very small. If the other guys set out each wall individually looks like youve got it spot on now

I've tried everything to carry the pattern around the wall but it just won't work, the only solution I can think of is using a different size tile which isn't going to happen!

I'm going to use the most recent layout I posted above....that's unless a pro can tell me how I can carry the pattern around the walls without having slithers on the corners, I don't think it's possible but i'm happy to be proved wrong

OK, first question, why have you altered the horizontal layout, I thought that worked ? Second, if you can give us some dimensions to an untied layout, plus tile sizes, plus grout, we might be able to come up with something, I think a hybrid between drawing 1 & 3 but we'll see. Out of interest, where do you hail from, maybe someone could pop around to have a look see

Hi Alan, do you mean wall dimensions?

To answer your question, I have altered the horizontal layout to create larger cuts on the corners.

I'm in the West Midlands area.

Doing a drawing on a computer do'es never seem match the real world on walls or floors IMO

    Hi

When setting out a wall on standard bond ie one on top of another, you measure the center of the wall and then work out you tile widths to the corner. If you end up with a slither then you half bond the tile over the center line resulting in a near as damn it full tile at each end.

Unfortunately when using a brick bond pattern, as your working from the center line on one course and half bond across it on the next, you willl always have a smaller rip on every other course.

With regards wrapping the pattern around the corner, each job works on its own merits, depending as to how long each return is in relation to where the tile finishes on the next corner - occasionally you can, 9 times out of 10 you work off each walls center line, with the larger tile a
nd smaller tile butting up to each other on respective corners ( still carries you desired effect), and then when you come to windows you set it to look the best as you hit the reveal......

Hope this makes sense to you

    Andrew
