Why ask and not let us see the replies!
If the tiles are well fixed the carpet layer should latex screed over them to tale out the joints.
Then lay carpet as on any hard floor.
If they sound or are hollow take them up and latex screed the floor.
Prehaps there should be a carpet layers forum.
Me - I would have taken the lot up put down underfloor heating and fixed travertine floor tiles.

No problem. Use a decent quality underlay. To fix the gripper around, spray adhesive first then cut the lengths of gripper into about 6 inch lenghts and use something like gripfil or a hot melt glue gun to fix. then lay carpet as normal. A decent underlay that I would recommend would be Duralay, the one that has a felt base and a rubberised top layer.

Hi Yomper...no kidding, glue will hold the tack stip well enough that they can kick the carpet off of it? Good to know....

My next question: How about laying a hardwood floor like cork or oak over tiles - the tiles are tight and flat, no broken or loose pieces. The door opens away from the room so no issue with the bottom door touching the wood.

Oak would be fine, layed as a floating floor. There is an underlay now available that is foam based but the top side is extremely sticky, Topps do it. Once you get use to working with it the flooring goes down very quickly. Failing that you could use a decent glue and glue joint the floor down, again a floating floor installation. If you use this method then you could use a fibre board underlay. It would be advisable to loose lay a DPM prior to installation.
As for cork only if you SLC'd ober the tiles first as cork being only a couple of mm thick it would more than likely show the grout lines through.
Personel preference ....go for Oak every time.

Quickest way to put gripper down over a concrete floor and ideal when you have to install say around a cob wall perimeter. Spray adhesive acts as a primer ans we all know that gripfils sticks like ****
