pictures of brushed aluminium tiled splasback

Hi everyone,

Thanks again to The Arms members for suggestions etc cutting these....I figured I should at least take a couple of pics as we all seem to like pics...especially pictures of power sockets (its about the cuts-im not really a total loon!) I thought they turned out really smart-what do you think? I am finishing the window surround when some more tiles arrive and there is the opposite wall to this one that has also been tiled but I figured that if you get the idea from this one, you won't need to see the other one. Trickiest thing with this was getting the cuts centred on the power socket and in the extractor fan area....im a bit anal about these things and I have to confess that I had to 'tweak' the row of wall cabinets to get everything set out nicely. Anway, comments suggestions etc always welcome. and also...what a nice customer....I seem to be getting a few of these at the moment.

Looks good mate. I see the worktop and the extractor don't align, but nothing to do with you and have come across this on quite a few occasions my self. Did they not want trim, just curious thought they would have went for some brushed steel type effect? Looks good anyway, well done, i haven't installed these yet but no doubt.....

well spotted re trim and wortop, tiles are 4mm thick so I would have ended up with a very deep bed thickness (the tiles are hollow so I had to back butter them) customer didnt want them anyway. The worktop and extractor where even further out before I started...best bit was the kitchen fitter had very kindly used PVA as a primer on every wall surface before I got there. Guess what I did on Saturday afternoon?

Not criticicising you mate as i said have come across the worktop/extractor alignment which you can't do much about. Interested in tiles are hollow, are they also transparent or can you see addy ribs through. Did you cut them on the back face and with dry rail or wet cutter As i said not installed these but sound a bit like glass and these things are handy to know. Only installed solid aluminium and that was a border. Anyway well done.

bit of a long story....customer originally wanted the tiles to only go halfway up the splashback (hence not having enough to finish in one go), I suggested that might look a bit odd and showed him different ways of setting them out, he liked the look of brickbond but really wanted chequerboard so we ended up doing a bit of both, I think it gives quite a nice framing around the hob.

No offence taken at all Tiles are solid Aluminium, I went all around the houses trying to figure how to cut them but ended up on my wet saw face up...dont even try to cut them face down, the brushed finish scratches just by looking at them.

Customer produced a tub of BAL grip but I ended up using rapid set flexible after primer G instead of PVA...I think I played it safer than sorry... the walls where pretty sound lathe and plaster but still a bit uneven and as I had to back butter into the hollows of the tiles as well, i thought there is no way tubbed is going to dry. I treated them pretty much as glass/hard porcelain..no moisture absorbancy....so tubbed wasn't going to work either. Weight wasn't an issue on the lathe and plaster as the tiles are as light as a feather.......and by the way, was there ever a primer A B C D E or F?

Thanks for that. Solid Alu........bet they are pricy. I have only installed an aluminium border which had a H cross section and could be cut with a junior hacksaw. I think we used ctf-3 with AD1 to install them.

Funnily enough, they are relatively inexpensive but cutting wise a hacksaw just won't dent them, I even contemplated getting the angle grinder to them but sanity and the thought of the shrapnel prevailed.

i think the chequerboard was a wise descision as it shows the contrast off a treat

ive never fixed ali tiles so like everyone else im curious but the other lads have already asked

the socket is very well centred and looks the mutts

I thought that but decided too dangerous, ended up as simple as you like and actually I couldnt believe what I ended up using.

i think i've read somewhere that it has to be plastic sockets with these tiles so the brass and chrome are out of the question due to the dangers of electric shock,but i have seem some funky coloured plastic sockets only thing is they might cheapen the look of the tiles!
