Default Tile on top of tiles.

Hi I am going to tile over my Kitchen floor which has tiles on it just now.
There r a few of them cracked and also a few with that hollow sound when tapped. The tiles that r down r 300mm by 300mm.

The tiles I plan to lay on top r 600mm by 600mm.

Should I lift the tiles that r cracked and make good.
By that I mean lift and fill gap left with cement??

    Or

In my mind the weight distribution of the bigger tile layed directly over the top of the exisisting tiles without touching the cracked ones(as long as the Ady is applied right and evenly).
Should mean that they will not crack like the tiles that r already down?

    Thanks Andyb

Clydebank your just down the road from me.I live in KNightswood.

Fair enough mate.By doing that I have more work to do.Also I cant lift the tiles under the work tops not that I need to.How long roughly would it take to lift them?
I am leaning towards tileing over them would u say that it would be sound to do so?

To do the job right, lift the tiles. If some tiles are cracked there must be something wrong somewhere so you are only tiling on top of a problem which may come back and bite you. Your call, my guess is that 99% of members will say remove old tiles

i'd agree with the other guys here, if you just tile over them to save a bit of graft it'll more than likely come back to bite you on the bum in the future! I'd strongly advise putting the effort in to get the floor made right before laying anymore and then at least you know the job's been done right, in my opinion, (could be wrong) if some of your tiles are damaged then laying on top of them is only gonna make your job as good as the job before it! if you get what i'm saying??

Whoever done them last didnt do a good job, if there are hollow points and cracked tiles the rest of them wont be fixed properly either and will cause problems later on
Get a drill that has a rotery stop on it and take the old tiles up, if you dont have a drill, brick bolster and a hammer, then fit new tiles propery, listen to what everyone is saying, if you tile on top it will most likely come back to haunt you later

Yes Thanks I understand what u guys r saying.

I am I right in saying that it is ok to tile on top of tiles?and if so I could repair the broken tiles and then tile over?As this would be quicker to do than lifting the lot.

Thanks for all the quick replys.

It would be a better job if they were all taken up.

You have not said if the original tiling is on a timber or concrete floor.
If you had tiled ontop of the old tiles on a timber floor you should check the additional weight factor for deflection in the floor surface and if on a concrete surface you would still hear the hollow sounds.
Glad you followed the forums advice and taken all those old tiles up.
It also means you won't have to alter doors, plinths etc. and would there have been enough room under the worktops for the fridges,washers,dishwashers.. .. ..
