If it's small areas of plaster then bonding if it's the whole wall tile weight would be a concideration. Small light tiles bond and finish the wall, heavy tiles you could dot and dab over the existing but depends on how good the plaster is fixed or take off back to the brick work and then dot and dab

my personal favourite is to render the walls with sand and cement, done by myself!

Sorry to hijack the thread......but in the same vein........

Customer pulled out bath and replaced with a walk in shower tray. This left a big void (back to block work) from shower base to where the bath height used to be. The original sand / cement render was well and truly fixed to the block work and not going anywhere.

Would you over board the whole wall (this would cause some major issues with regards to the shower base)?
Would you fill the void with bonding or small amount of wedi / Hardi / PB?
Would you fill the void with bonding and then skim with multi-finish to square up the shower cubicle?

Depending the thickness of the render, usually about 10mm, so I would use some bonding. If the render was very deep, say 15mm then plasterboard at 9.5mm so theres room for the adhesive

on this particular job its only a thin coat for the walls and the origional render is in good nick just a few patches here and there with old adhesive stuck to wall, thanks for the advice on the dot and dab though
