Discuss Another slate question in the Tiling Forum at TilersForums; I've got some slate thats 15mm thick Could i reduce this to approx 10mm using a feather bolster? Would the slate still retain its surface properties? I have weight issues ...

    Default Another slate question

    I've got some slate thats 15mm thick
    Could i reduce this to approx 10mm using a feather bolster? Would the slate still retain its surface properties?
    I have weight issues where i cannot use them this thick

    you could but if it's a large area it will take some amount of time,the slate will still be good once it is sealed!

    Dont think you wil get a clean finish you might get 5mm off aroun d the four edges but will end up with a 5mm lump in the middle of the tile. A lot depends on the density of the tile some will split really easy but when they do it will split in with the grain of the stone. Remember this is natural stone so it will only split with the natural grain you may end up with 5mm at one side and 10mm at other.

    Only way would be to try if as you say have lots of time you could use a wet cutter and then cut lines on back of tile close together and then use your feather bolster this will allow you to control how much comes of and will allow you to keep face of tile unchanged.

    Feather cutting as highlander mentions is a great idea....but will be very tedious....but is a better option than trying to split thickness them as you will get way toooo much waste..
