Hi,
Has anyone got any tips on how to box in some pipes? Going to be tiling over the box.
I was thinking of 44x20cm batons on wall and floor but unsure how to join the two bits of ply at the corner.
Thanks
Chris

i would join the 2 pieces of ply with some 2x1 first then put box onto the batons and that should do the trick.

screw a baton to wall and screw a baton to floor.Cut two pieces of plasterboard to suit.Where the two pieces will meet is where you fix another piece of wood onto one of the pieces of plasterboard on the underside..Now screw a piece to one of the batons and then fix the other, finally screw the two together at the meeting point.

For this soil stack (4 inches) instead of boxing it in we went at a 45* angle.
Obviously if we had build a box then a sharp edge would have been on the receiving end of a shower jet.
As you can see the pipe is "boxed in" but its not obvious.

Thanks for the replies everyone.
Aaron - it has to go behind a basin and toilet so has to be done in sections. Shame really coz that looks a good product.

PS another "trick" if you like is that we boxed in the whole wall to hide all the pipes including the 4" soil stack.
But because the whole wall came out so far and it was a waste of space we cut niches into it so that the space wasn't totally wasted.
The whole wall was boxed in, so in order to make better use of the space niches were cut into them

pipe boxing is an ugly bellyache imo, is there no way you can take pipes under the floor?
Not really Doug. The floor is concrete (bungalow).
use pendock boxing from PTS

prices start from around £10
far neater than a plywood boxing
I have a quick queston about boxing in so I thought I would add it to this thread.
I'm boxing in pipes next week for the first time. When you fit the battons to the wall, can you screw straight into plasterboard or do you need to drill a hole then use a rawl plug?
Thanks
Ben
I don't mean to sound patronising here Ben, but you should screw into the timber batons (studs) behind the plasterboard. If you tap, you should be able to work out where they are - or use one of those rather nice stud finders being mentioned in other threads here. Putting it bluntly, if you thump the wall with the flat of your hand and feel any movement, you need to stud up from the floor as added strength. After all, punters have been known to stand on the boxes in the past - especially their children...![]()

Another way to find studs in the wall is simply drill a hole
in the plaster bend a piece wire and run it along the back
of the plaster until it hits the stud

With regard to screwing battens to walls and floors, I often use my old mate 'Mr. Silicone' - nice and cheap from Screwfix and is as strong as screws any day.....

I wouldn't agree i'm afraid, silicone is inded a strong adhesive but it depends on which way the force is coming from. If like Nardini says some kid stands on it or maybe an adult steps up to reach say a window it will come away. for the sake of 10 mins and a couple of screws I'd be safe rather than sorry. I'd add a couple of blobs of silicone along with the screws but that's just me because it's normally knocking about in a bathroom fit

I take your point - but surely in the case of vertical boxing-in, using silicone is a far quicker method and allows for some adjustment to get things perfectly square (and especially where there may be a chance of hitting some rogue water pipes!).

If your boxing it would be to hide the water pipes

I applaud your trust in plumbers/electricians in that they know the meaning of true vertical and horizontal runs.....lol
I suppose because a burst pipe happened to me once, I am just wary, that's all.
Well I finally built the box!!!!!
Here are the before and after pics.
I'm quite proud of myself as I have never tiled before in my life. Not sure if the "setting out" is as the pros would do it but we're happy with it.
Thanks everyone for the advice.
