I KNOW I didn't do it, 2 mins after customer was playing with it I got it out again and hey presto!

It still works!!
Customer hasn't admitted it which really annoys me.
He did tell me too buy a new one, stick it on bill and he'll have this one - sounds like an admission of sorts but why was he tinkering with me tool in the 1st place

Simple.
Do as he says. Put it down to experience, and be more careful when customers and tools mix in future.
You've learned the easy way. Customer obviously feels guilty and wants to do right by you.
I would be more pleased in your situation that you've got a customer with a concience than annoyed at the breakage.
