Replacing Marmol Compac Tiles
Just been to do an estimate. Its a big office building in and I'm dealing with the head of maintenance. In total there must be over a thousand sqm of floor tiles.
The floor cost them 1.5 million a year ago and in places the tiles are hollow and not adhered. They use a cherry picker to change light bulbs because the ceiling is so high.
There are expansion joints in about 5m2 intervals on the floor and they want me to retile the floor in one of these sections where the tiles have been cracked by the cherry picker. The tiles directly in contact to the joints are ok so I'll be replacing the rest.
The floor has a concrete layer, a layer of polystyrene(?) and a screed on top of that with underfloor pipes within it. The tiles are 600 x 300 x 10 marmol compac tiles from italy and they have bags of Ardex spf adhesive.
Has anybody used these tiles before and do they need any prep?
Do you think it may be the adhesive that has caused the tiles not to adhere or maybe it was the tilers? The maintenance guy told me they just threw them down.
As I am replacing tiles I will obviously have to have the same depth of adhesive as was originally used to keep the floor level, but if the original amount of adhesive was a contributing factor to the floor failing will this cause me problems?
I've put in a good estimate (for me) as he told me to charge high because they will pay and I think I'm the only one who's looked at it.
I'll have to do it at night though but I don't mind that.
I really want to do a perfect job on it because the floor is so big there may be lots more work there because there are other sections that need doing, they're just not as bad as this one.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
Paul
