Red face n00b at wall tiling needs advice

    Hey guys

A warm welcome from South Africa

I chanced upon this forum when googling for tiling over paint, and found this thread : tiling over paint

However, I also have another question : the okes who plastered the wall (when the house was built) skimped somewhat on the kitchen walls - two corners definitely needs filling up in order for the wall to be level with the rest of the wall.

    A top-down version would look like this : ---____________---

the ---'s being in the corners of the kitchen. At chest height the wall is 100% level, it is only at floor level that we have this problem.

What should I use to fill the wall up? Tiling cement? Any recommendations? It is not a minimal depth, the gap measures up to 25mm.

    Regards

    Libs

    a rapid set tile adhesive!
if it's concrete background use standard rapid-set,if it's ply or wood material use a flexible tile adhesive(both must be cement based i.e bagged adhesive not tubbed)

25mm is mighty deep for adhesive, even rapidset, it may slump an awful lot and you could get shrinkage cracking. Might pay to try two coats, putting the 2nd layer on after the first has hardened up sufficiently. I'm assuming you need to feather out the edges, otherwise I'd suggest a layer of adhesive (to bond to the old wall) and wall mud (sand/cement/lime) over the top whilst the addy is still wet. Use a straightedge and a see-sawing motion to strike it off flush with the surrounding wall, and when it sets up some (maybe a couple of hours), lightly go over it with a flat block of wood (or wood float if you have one) and knock off any high spots.

Good luck with whichever method you use

    Hey guys!

    Thanks for the replies!

Will discuss it with the SU and see what we've got.

    Cheers!

PS : It definitely is warmer here than over there
