tiling an Aqua-Dec and

First time I've tried this so looking for some advice so I don't make a hash of it. 1300 x 800 tray in place on concrete floor all level. Tilesafe and Devimat to be laid over. I've done simple CAD plan of the floor shape with the 400x400 10mm thick slates drawn over and the layout is fairly even with the first tile centred over the waste outlet (square). I'm thinking that this first tile will need to be cut diagonally one way first then the other to envelope it over the outlet and follow the diagonals of the tray. Obviously I'll then have to trim the ends to fit around the outlet, the thing is how best to cut the tiles? I have been advised by the tile suppliers to use an angle grinder with diamond disc. Is this right and if so how can I make sure that the finished cuts are neat and that I don't cut a channel which is wider than a grout line?

Also the three enclosing walls are all different finishes, plywood behind the concealed mixer valve (with water based varnish finish), side wall is blockwork with sand/cement render, end wall is blockwork with hard plaster finish. The Tilesafe will come up the walls 75-100 mm. Do I need to tank the walls or will waterproof grout be sufficient. I only ask as I see from the forum that some use Mapegum WPS?? Walls are to be mosaic tiles.

hi mate i always wet cut diagonals ! The cuts will be better than a grinder & also will allow you a bit of tolerance for spacing as opposed to score and snap !
Go from each corner of the drain to each corner of tray.
Or if circular drain go centre of drain to each corner of the tray

Nick is spot on with cutting the tiles. One thing I can add is that it is a good idea to draw the diagonal lines on the former/attached membrane that you want to cut to when you come to do the cuts.

I would agree about using a wet cutter for these cuts.

As far as the walls are concerned, I would think about tanking them. Wetdecs can do you a great deal on some membrane if you ask him, he will also be better placed to advise on which product to use and how much you will need if you give him the dimensions. I didn't tank the walls in the wetroom I did after raising the option with the client. They didn't want to pay for it, which was fair enough. mind you we were using 13x8 tiles - fewer grout lines.

The wetroom I fitted out used a 1200x1200 Tilux EPS tray, cut down to fit an area 1200x820. Tiles are 600x300 porcelain.



With the benefit of hindsight I would have drawn lines from the corners of the tray to the centre of the drain before I cut it down. This would have eliminated the guesswork as to exactly where the lines should be.

That is what I did mate, if you look carefully at photo of tray you can see where it has been cut, but line drawn through to each corner, before separating, fixing & tiling
