    Default Garage floor

hello all just need a little advice.

Am going to tile a standard domestic garage floor . Substrate is a solid concrete base with no movement.

Client is quite concerned about how thick a tile they have to get. They are looking at different porcelains but want to keep costs down as it is only a garage floor.

    So...
Does thickness of tile really matter if it layed properly?
Im considering laying Ditra , is this really neccessary baring in mind keeping costs down>?

    Cheers

Why is your customer asking you to tile the garage floor? is this part of a renovation project? what is the customer intending to use the garage floor for?

I have visions that you'll be laying a beautiful floor for them to park their car on!

its in a high end refurb, so have gone to town on the rest of the house, so having a standard concrete floor to park their car on is just not good enough.

    Oh my! That is flash!

Something tells me you'll be looking at materials designed for car showrooms and I bet that won't be cheap... I'm sure one of the guys on here was doing a car showroom job last year so its worth looking out for the replies cjones!

I can't see why standard cement based adhesive with a trowel giving 100% coverage wouldn't be just fine, as for the tiles, I can't see why thickness would be an issue if laid correctly.

There are many porcelain tiles only 6mm thick that would do the job just fine, providing they have been bedded correctly with correct adhesive. Johnson's do a non slip range that would be more than adequate !

Does the garage floor have a DPM....?

As for the tiles and adhesive....rapid set is fine and porcelain bodied tiles are great for this type of project...

Cheers boys, i thought any tile would be alright, i think it was the guy in the tile shop trying to get the client to buy a thicker more exspensive porcelain by scaring her.

Dave i dont know about the DPM .it is a sound concrete base which has been there for years.

    Thanks once again

Tiled garage floors are the norm in Spain do it all the time but we tend to use what they call a Gres tile, dont know the English for it but it is a ceramic but much harder usualy non slip and frost resistant.

What about grout? Would he need to go for an epoxy to cope with potential oil spills or are there cheaper alterntives?

I wonder how much that is........

Normal rapid set/flexi set will suffice at half the cost..

its the bed thats important................no voids, 100% coverage

years ago i tiled the complete downstairs of a house for a brazillian woman, i thought she was joking when she first told me but it was lovely when it was done , very practical
after completion she asked me to tile her detached double garage,i knew by know she didnt joke about these things. i latexed the floor to start with and used 100mm quarries

to finish off i fitted a row of base units ,worktop and wall units to put all her car care bits and pieces in

ive always wanted something like that for my motor but my garages end up packed to the rafters with tools and materials

yes normal rapid set is fine to use. You could use a quarry tile on a garage floor they are quite popular but if the looking for a better qualitly tile then definetly a good porcelain tile

personally if it was my garage i would use a quarry tile if your parking your car on it

Did 30 sq m garage floor in November last year, used a blue coloured Johnsons tile, porcelain, 150mm x 150mm. non slip, got them from Waxmans, originally around £25 per metre, but were selling off cheap, so I paid £5.68 a metre, sold to customer for £15 a metre. They have a 4WD, tiles still down, no cracks or lifting !
