Gridding is used to make the fixing easier and quicker, you basically set out (your floor for instance) and mark out the area into a grid of say 4 tiles wide and 4 tiles deep plus grout joint width. The aim is to help keep things as square as possible, as easy as possible.
Do a search in the box at the top James, there has been a few posts on the subject!

I used that system. I Marked out both the floor and walls ahead of the tiler coming to fit the tiles.
He wasnt pleased! - His view was that I cramped his licence to work freely. By marking out with the grid system he said it was like completing a colour by number painting.
What a primi-donna !
I thought I was helping. He didnt... End result? I got what I wanted so I dont lose sleep making use of a grid system.

i think i would be upset too if a customer done this for me,a bit different in your case cause you know what your talking about, but imagine someone had done this for you and the tiles turned out to be poor quality(lets say a major diy shop we all know)where i've came across floor tiles with 2mm discrepencies,so i would obviously have to alter the grout lines to make this unnoticable, but imagine explaining this to someone who's knowledge of tiling is knowing where to buy them!
