Whether or not you have liability insurance, does everyone make certain checks before starting a job ?
Have heard many tales from guys of all trades who have been blamed for damage to sanitary ware, wood floors, kitchen worktops etc. They swear blind that it was not them who did the damage.
As a matter of course I take ten or fifteen mins at the start of every job to inspect for any possible damage to baths, shower trays worktops etc. If I notice anything damaged then I flag with the customer straight away.
This is even more relevant when you are working on a job that has multi trades involved. You don't want to have the blame pinned on you for another guys damage !!
Obvious really, but easy enough to forget about. May be too late afterwards.
There will also be unscrupulous customers who may wish to get a new carpet or bath off your insurance !!!

Quite right leatherface, got to make sure everything is in order before you start. No point noticing something afterwards then claiming you didnt do it. When i renewed my liability insurance this year i included kitchen, bathroom and bedroom? refurb and installation so as covered just about everything as well as tiling. Actually came in less than last years quote when i told them what i could get it for elsewhere.....made that bit up!

I chipped a customers worktop a few months back,in her utility room.
I told her straight away and she was great,at least you told me she said,i offered to sort for her but she refused and got the kitchen back to sort, just as well it wasn't an expensive worktop, there was no charge. You can't be too careful.

Just to add, find out where water stop tap is !!!!
Mate of mine in Castleford didn't and went through a pipe, could not find stop tap, could not get in touch with customer. Six hours later river of water through bathroom ceiling, down into guys kitchen, thousands of pounds worth of damage. Luckily he was insured. Could have saved himself a big claim.
Common sense again. but bet not everyone remembers to ask !

Re: Got liability insurance or not - protect youself further
bang on there leatherface everyone should have it and the bit you said about checking a room before starting anything is a must especially when you do work for kitchen and bathroom companies, I recently got stung because i failed to check one kitchen thourghly i noticed on scratch on the work top but failed to notice the scratch on a expensive hob and i couldnt prove it ive had to foot half the bill it is something I WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER and for those who dont have public liabilty get it, it doesnt cost a great lot and your covered dont think " Ill be right with out it"
