Internet Speed
Just wondering how people are finding their speed of download these days.
I am convinced that over the last year its got slower. Its not to bad in the morning but from lunch time on it gets slower and slower so that by tea time/early evening I often give up and that's with a broadband connection.
I think I will blame it on the Yanks as they start waking up between 5 and 10 hours after us.

Re: Internet Speed
it gets slower about that time because people are getting home from work and switching there computers on to download stuff as your aware of,i,'m using broadband the now because when i moved bt wanted almost £200 to change the phone line over from virgin,i wasn't paying it after doing so only a year before in my previous home, and now i realise how much slower it is compared to sky,but this said it depends also in which area you live as to how your broadband works!

Re: Internet Speed
Give this a go, once the test is complete it will tell you which providers are potentially fastest in your area.

Re: Internet Speed
I'm an openreach broadband emgineer, looking to get into tiling!! So I can give something back to the forums.
Basically most homes are not wired properly for broadband hense the slow speeds.
It is to do with how far you live from the exchange but most peeps should be getting 2mb plus. What you need to do is take all your ext sockets off and dis connect the bell wire (usual on orange on terminal 3).
Next step is to have your router plugged into the master socket and not an extension, and also if you can get hold of an NTE2000 and put that on your master socket stops the need to have filters round the house and holds a much better signal.
Also check your dropwire outside, if its old grey 1pr just snip it, report a fault and get enginner out. because the fault it before master socket you won't get charged and engineer would need to put up a new one.
There loads more you can do but would be to much detail, check that lot first.
cheers

Re: Internet Speed
done the speed check (cheers Oli) my d/load speed is 4000Kbps and my u/load speed is 360Kbps. Is this any good? ie speed? it says I could get a max speed of 6 Mbps. Should I change my ISP?

I would say that is pretty good Doug.

Re: Internet Speed
Did the test also tell you what your loop attentuation was and also your signal to noise ratio or SNR?
Changing service porvider won't do anything as they are all run over the same copper wires!! the old BT network now run by Openreach. Basically they service providers just have there own equipment in the exchanges, no difference in speed just difference in downtimes.
Only other individual bb supplier is virgin, but heard not that great overall.
Only way to increase speed after wiring house correctly is to get a BB engineer to swap your line from the cab to the exchange onto the shortest cable and also swap out your D-side that would give you the best possible speed for your location.
That 6mb is capable on your current copper wire connection but if you swapped out to lower db cable could get it upto 8mb.

Re: Internet Speed
What is an NTE2000? and where would I be likely to get one?
There are 4 sockets in the house. The main has the broadband connection and the base station for a cordless system, plus a signalman monitor that automatically monitors my oil tank and sends level to the supplier for automatic top up deliveries. There is corded phone in the kitchen, but the two other sockets are no longer used.
The feed to the house is underground and the exchange is at the top of the road about 200m away. Its a small rural exchange. So it would seem as though I am probably getting the best service I can.
Perhaps I shouldn't complain the next village nearest town cannot get broadband at all as they are to far from the town exchange.

Re: Internet Speed
Hi mate,
If exchange is at the bottom of the road you should be getting 8mb no matter what size exchange.
I would disconect the sockets not in use.
PM your address and if I can remeber I'll send ya one !!

Re: Internet Speed
gonna change my isp from plus net to bt, reason being i can get a potentially faster internet d/load speed (5mbps) plus I'm cancelling my sky tv and going for the bt vision version. Think I'm doing the right thing maybe bobski could give me an impartial verdict?
ps exchange is at bottom of road!!
