Personal preference, some of us like to border first, some like to field first then border but it has to really accurately measured out.

We've always done the main design first and then the border, but it's all personal preference. Top tip: ensure you substrate is as flat as possible any variations really make things hard work. So spend extra time on the substrate and everything becomes loads easier.

We use steel rulers with a fine dry marker as a gauge rod for marking out we also use the rules edge for checking flatness of the tiles.
