I'm quiet at the moment but doing my own bathroom which is a really big job, had it planned since last summer, removed tanks etc to enable brick wall to be knocked out, had a few quotes to do this week, not bad seeing as I am not advertising in the local rag which seems to be a waste of time anyway, hopefully things will pick up and people will spend their savings on home improvement. I hope it gets better for you Rad

    Hi All,

I just wanted to share my own pearls of wisdom and experience about being made redundant and all the upset, turmoil and sadness it caused me.

I was made redundant end of Nov 2007. I had known for over 4 weeks and had been going to job interviews but no offers, which really surprised me as I'm a part qualified HR adviser!

I went to sign on (nobody should ever be too proud to do this, you pay your taxes and NI just like all other workers) and was told, ever so politely by the Job Centre that if I didn't get a job within an HR (human resources/personnel) related role within 13 weeks, I would have to start looking at ANY JOB otherwise my Jobseekers Allowance would be cut! JA is an absolute pittance at £117 every fortnight, and it wouldn't even have paid half of my mortgage, but I used it for fuel in my car and starting searching for jobs further afield.

At the same time, my house sale fell through, we couldn't buy the really expensive house in the posh part of town that we wanted because we could no longer get a mortgage, and January 2008 rolled around and I was still out of work. So, hubby and I decided to take control, and get what we wanted in 2008.

As part of my redundancy package I had been offered some time with an outplacement consultant who helped me to hone my interview skills, communication skills, CV etc and within weeks, I was coming second in job interviews.. still not close enough but better!

Hubby and I stuck together like glue (we'd only been married since Aug 2007) and we lent on each other for support even though we knew we were falling deeper into debt. Eventually I got a temporary job 50 miles from home, commuted everyday, cost me a fortune but it was a job and then within weeks, we'd had an offer on the house and I got a permanent job based in Chester.

It took a long time, and a hard slog, and it was really starting to depress me, but you need to stay strong and stick with it. No matter what life throws at you, keep doing it the way you want to, only you can help yourself and change your destiny.

sorry for the long long long post... but I just hope a few of you will take strength from it during the bad times and come out fighting..
