1 : remove plasterboard and re-board with plasterboard or backer board...

    2 : overboard the wall...

    Hi Dave

Thanks. Not sure what you mean by overboard the wall - do you mean overboard it again? Im assuming you wouldnt want to skim it? How much does backerboard hold?

    Best Wishes

Yes i mean just overboard on top of what you have....but you will need to mechanical fix as well..

How much does backerboard hold weight wise..?....well this depends upon brand but is about 40kg and upto 50 kg on the cement/glass fibre type...

No probs howard.......if it is a stud wall then screw through directly into the studs....

If it is a dot&dab installation then screw and plug through into wall substrate to get extra hold...in both types of installation washers will help prevent screw heads pulling through...

hi howard not sure if you got confused with what dave said in your post above.
the screws you are on about are if you are fixing into plasterboard to hang soething, for instance.what dave meant by mechanical was toscrew through the new board old board and INTO THE BATTENS/SUBSTRATE underneath to strenghthen the fixing

what tiles were you thinking of originally Howard? have you got a weight per m2 for them. I'm sure you've already thought this through but sometimes peeps think large format tiles weigh more per m2 than average size tiles. This is only true when the large format tiles are thicker!

    Hi Guys

Thanks for the answers. Would need to be long screws to go through new board and then old board. How do you know where the studs are if the wall is skimmed - maybe Im not quite sure?

I was only really asking because most walls are skimmed plaster and if I did get a job that had large tiles I wouldnt know what was involved. I thought you might have to strengthen the studs or use ametal frame.

    Cheers

The studs should be 600 or 450 centres depending the thickness of plasterboard, could use a braddle to find the studs or a stud finder. When screwing the new boards don't let the screws heads go below the paper surface otherwise they will be next to useless
