silicone over grout
Hi All
Is it ok to put silicone over grout? Got a large gap - 1cm - between the bath and the tiles and so I filled some of it with grout - planning now on finishing over this with the silicone - just wanted to know if anyone else has had thios experience - i can probably carve out most of the grout if I absolutely have to
cheers

Is the bath 10mm out from the wall or are the tiles coming down the wall 10mm short of the bath

Re: silicone over grout
The tiles come down the wall 10mm short of the bath - they are 450 by 300 and they stick out about 8mm also so I've put in some grout to fill most of the gap but left enough space to put silicone on top to seal it -
Cheers

Re: silicone over grout
Silicone won't stick to grout over the long run.
If you can you should silicone first allow it to cure then grout.

Did you not tile UP from the bath?

Re: silicone over grout
could you not remove the course of tiles round the bath, get some bath to tile trim which may gain your ten mm and nip some off the tile if needed as you replace them? silcone n grout will look atrosish if im honest. Or can you not source some type of ceramic quadrant style border like gets used on victorian?

Re: silicone over grout
You can get a bath seal that will cover that gap.....tele-seal from screwfix.....will look better than a 10mm grout/silicone gap..

Re: silicone over grout
I agree with dave, grout or silicon should only be used for 5 - 6mm gaps at the very most otherwise the grout will crack and the silicon just pull over time. Also not a good idea to silicon over grout.

Re: silicone over grout
Thanks for all the replies - the bath is slightly concave so at the head and foot the tiles are about 3mm above and in the middle about 10mm. The grout is in the gap so it will be behind the silicone. The silicone will adhere to the tile and the bath but have the grout behind it - and that's why I made this post because I'd heard ("Also not a good idea to silicon over grout" (Rob)) that you shouldn't put silicone over grout and I'm curious to know why? - do they react togther in some way? In this case the silcone will be in contact with the grout behind it but the grout won't be visible and the silicone won't be sticking to it. I could have used some kind of cheap filler but I thought grout would be fine.
Thanks for the tip on the seal product - would be a good idea but it's a small bath and it slopes away from the wall immediately
Cheers
Jon

Re: silicone over grout
I'm not aware of any reaction between grout and silicone, only problem is the finish, can't imagine it looking great. If you're faced with a bath like that in the future when setting out, it might be an idea to start with half or a two third tile above the bath......hindsight is great!
