Personally i wouldn't tile it....think of the vibration from the staircase...

Personally I tend not to tile on ceilings, or overhead locations. The reason being is that eventually the tiles will come down, maybe not in five years time, maybe not seven years time but due to gravitation and movement the tiles will come down.
I don't want any tiles that I have put up dropping on anybodies head.

hello there buddy i wouldn't tile the underneath of the stairs i'd just tile up to them, as Dave said the vibration of people walking up and down the stairs could well dislodge a few if not all the tiles, good luck
