I only tile on tile under 300 x300. BUT I use powder gear for it. You have to remember weight size etc on the existing tile/substrate...thats the problem, what is the substrate?

What is the issue with removing the old tiles?

As Fred says, you need to be aware of the weight of both layers of tiles, plus the adhesive and grout.

If they are on a plasterboar wall, I would be tempted to remove the plasterboard with the old tiles on, chuck the whole lot then replace with new plasterboard then tile.#

I did this recently, it worked a treat.
