Re: Ply or Plaster
Best thing would be to strip existing tiles.
But plasterboard wins, over ply everytime in my opinion.
And if you, or your customer, can afford it, tile backerboard would be better still.

Thanks
I agree stripping the tiles is best, but they want a quick job,and the tiles on the wall are solid.

Re: Ply or Plaster
What tiles are on the wall .?
And what tiles are you going to be putting on...there are weight issues to think about as well...

If you're tiling full height on the walls, don't cover the plasterboard. Tile straight onto it.

Re: Ply or Plaster
I am going to put 600*600 tiles up

Re: Ply or Plaster
I take it the tiles are porcelain at that size at about 28kg m2, Plasterboard will take 32kg m2, Plaster 20kg m2 weight of tile

Re: Ply or Plaster
It may well take you the same amount of time to remove and replace the plasterboard with the existing tiles on it and then re tile the whole lot, just make sure the paint above the tiles is suitably removed.
Just my opinion. I did this last week and it worked brilliantly, though I only retiled to the same height.

Tiles MUST come off then.
Also, renew existing plasterboard or replace with tile backerboards.
Plaster can only take 20kg/m2

Even plasterboard might not take the weight of those tiles leslie....
They are big tiles to stick on top of tiles already there...

Unskimmed plasterboard can take some 32kg/sqm,
So, depending on the weight he may be advised to replace all the plasterboard or, as dave says, with hardibacker or similar.

I know how much weight plasterboard takes.
He suggested that he might be plastering the walls though.
He also said that he'd be fixing 600x600 tiles.
Even if they are 12mm porcelian, including his adhesive and grout, he will be just about right on the 32kg limit.

Re: Ply or Plaster
Leslie.. we think you need to remove the old tiles first and prep the walls enough to support those tiles....

If you're using a cement based adhesive, 2:1 SBR and water. I prefer BAL APD.
