| Help on prep please | | Hi Can someone please give me some advice as I am fairly new to this. I’m tiling a kitchen wall where the customer has taken off the old tiles revealing a very uneven surface of rough plaster, old adhesive and in places it has gone back to the plasterboard. I am putting up ceramics with a travertine mosaic border. Would I be best to take it all back to the plasterboard and either tile straight onto it or line it with a waterproof matting which Topps suggested to me and tile onto that. The tiles will be going up to a point above which the wall is painted and I am worried about damaging that. Secondly the lady has already bought her tiles and the mosaic is a good few mm’s thicker than the ceramics. What would be the best way to end up with the same level finish? This is probably a simple situation for the more experienced out there but any advice would be appreciated - thanks Richard | | |

| Re: Help on prep please | | Not a good one for a new bod really,
Take adhesice off or you will have probs with border hitting high spots. It wont be easy as pb will tear up, go at it slow then fill back any holes you have with a patching plaster, you should now have a workable surface.
You will need to bed your tiles out to your border and the best way would be to use a powdered white quick adhesive. mark your border line out and batten across with door stop, stick your border on. tomorro take off the batten and your border will serve as a guide to get the field tile flat

.. | Thanks for advice. Sorry if being dim but can I clarify that you are saying I should patch up the surface rather than go back to pb?
And what is door stop?

Richard | I read it as go back to plaster, and repair any holes you make.

| Re: Help on prep please | | Thanks Beanz........
Its the strip of wood around the inside of a door lining that the door closes against. Its better than batten as it is light enough to straighten if its bowed.

Just one more thing - I will tile straight onto the pb once made good, but is there any merit in using the waterproof matting for this job or is that best for bathrooms?
