porcelain v ceramic.

Hi, is there a greater charge for installing porcelain than ceramic. if so how much. Its a bathroom 23m2 with a few dodgy cuts. ive priced for ceramic but the tiles are porcelain. should i re negotiate or just do it at original price. ta for advice

Porcelain is more difficult to work with due to its very hard nature. But if you have the right tools and equipment then it needn't slow you significantly.

Re-negotiation of price with the customer is tricky. They will have an expectation that you know your trade / product. Going back with revisions at this early stage is likely to leave the impression you are not as familar with the product and their confidence in you as a tradesman may be reduced.

Its your call. And as I always say with the porcelain posts......

I would nt charge more unless you need to drill some holes thats when 365 comes in!!(just explain the difficulty in drilling without the specialist bits and therefore the need to charge extra now they have changed the product

I think a lot depends on the actual tiles you will be fitting. Generally I price my work the same for porcelain as ceramic. If however you need to start sealing etc, then stipulate the cost as a (necessary) extra. Large format stuff and certain porcelain that needs to be wet cut entirely, would need to be charged at a different rate, I feel.

Mainly if there's lots of cutting "wet" involved then it does take longer with porcelain

this sort of thing comes up all the time i always ask what the tiles are ceramic or porcelain and make ir clear that with porcelain there is a higher price
the customer always asks whats the difference a tile is a tile isnt it ?after a long explanation about wet cutting and different adhesives and they normally accept the price difference

I always put in my quote the tile they said they were going to buy and that if another type of tile was purchased, a difference in price would be added.

Had a lady once who said she was buying ceramic floor tiles for 8m2, I turned up, and she bought marble...............get the point.
