MY QUESTION TO YOU ALL ARE THE NEW AGE TILERS BEING TAUGHT HOW TO USE GAGE STICKS GRID FLOORS AND READ DRAWINGS MY REASON IS WE HAD A NEW TILER START AND WHEN I ASKED THIS QUESTION HE LOOKED AT ME AS IF I HAD TWO HEADS AND SAID HE HAD NEVER HEARD OF THIS IM SORRY IF THIS OFFENDS ANYONE THIS WAS NOT MY INTENTION

I found that doing grid ceilings for 15 years helped me with tiling measurements and setting out .

I'm course newbie and we were shown to set using 3,4,5 and gauge stick. Dry lay first to see how the cuts lay.

Having started as a mason's apprentice, I like the brick layer's tape measure, but they don't make one for tile so I do a dry lay with spacers for my longest run and put a wide tape on top and mark out with felt pen where the joints are.
A little rubbing alcohol or varsol at the end of the job and the tape is ready for the next one.
No boards and rods for me.
The 3,4,5 is a neat trick.
Measuring from corner to corner as you would when framing a wall works in some room shapes.
I use a string to check floor and wall for straight and level.
I've developed quite an eye for spotting deviation, but a string helps on those mornings when the eyes are not firing on all cylinders.
