Tile over Concrete and Floorboards
Can anyone help me. I am tiling my kitchen. It is mostly concrete which has been layed over tiles, however some of the tiles are still showing. There is an area that is just floor boards, however it is in an area that will not be walked on. My plan is to just lay some 5mm board down on the floorboards and tile onto this. If I used any thicker board it would make that area too high in comparison to the rest of the floor. Also, there is a slight dip where the kitchen runs into the hall and onto floorboards. What can I use to fill this with and still be able to use concrete adhesive??
A bit long winded I know but any help would be much appreciated

Re: Tile over Concrete and Floorboards
Looks like ply in the hall and a slab of crete on the right???

Do you mean that concrete has been poured over a tile floor?
What kind of concrete?
How thick is it?
What is under the tiles?
Were the tiles solidly attached to whatever they are on?
Is the "concrete" actually bonding well to the tiles?

Re: Tile over Concrete and Floorboards
Yep exactly that. The tiles are well bonded to the surface beneath them and the concrete I would say is only a few mm thick. I am toying with the idea of laying the board on the floorboards and then applying a total cover of new concrete (or suitable substitute) to ensure it is totally flat. Is this overkill do you think?? What should I use?
I bet your thinking I should pay someone who knows that they're doing to do it!! I like to have a go though, however I'm sure I'll make a mess of it and end up calling on one of your colleagues in the end!!

Re: Tile over Concrete and Floorboards
Given that there is some kind of concrete (type unknown) poured a few mm thin over tiles is a huge worry.
It could be a self leveler, but if the tiles have not been scarified on their surface with a diamond grinder the bond strength of that concrete is in question.
I would most definitely recommend that you have an expert opinion take an actual look at it before you proceed to throw money at it.
Maybe one of these lads are close to you.
If not get a reputable tile guy in your area.
Good luck
