pricing for waste tiles
Hi all,
Sorry if i'm going over old ground here.
If a builder has a room that is 30 msq exact and you have to allow more tiles for the cuts, do you charge aswell for the extra cuts/percent or just for 30 msq exact?? An architect told me I should only charge the 30 which has thrown me. How would you price it?
Cheers,
Steve

Re: pricing for waste tiles
I price for the actual area to be tiled, so if that's 30sqm, plus 10% for wastage. then I charge for the 30sqm.
After all, when cutting tiles and it leaves you with large amounts to be binned, your not actually fixing the wastage tiles are you, just the cuts, which are part of the over all 30sqm.

Re: pricing for waste tiles
If i charged per m2 I would only charge for m2 fixed, after all, you dont fix the extra 10% waste, it's just the off cuts from what you've fixed and already charged for.
Like when you buy a carpet for an L shaped room, in one piece, there's an offcut, but you dont get charged by the fitter for cutting that bit off and chucking at away!

Re: pricing for waste tiles
If i was supplying the tiles, i'd charge for the waste Andy, but i wouldnt charge waste for labour only.

Re: pricing for waste tiles
oli when i measure a job say its 20m2 i add on 10% for waste thats 22m2 and thats what i charge for , after all you are handling and using 22m2 so why not?? i was surprised that some of you dont because its standard procedure here , what if the job is say 100m2 you would be losing 10m2 which could work out to £250/300

I think there is some confusion, which i tried to clear up with my second post but have obvioulsy failed misrably
,
I dont charge for waste if i DONT supply the tiles, but if i were to supply the tiles then the customer would pay for all the tiles including the 10% waste, if you see what i mean.
If the customer bought thier own tiles say 10m2, with an extra 10% for waste so 11m2 and i charge fixing only, i would charge for 10m2, not 11m2.
This is why I go day rate, much easier IMO.

Re: pricing for waste tiles
some of the old tilers used to charge per cut and it s the same principle- your handling and cutting those tiles no matterwho supplies them so why not charge for it!! it worked out to at least a $ 10000 pay rise for me
