    Default Tile over linoleum?

    Hi all.....

hope your working week has started off with a bang and that things are not too stressfull. Went to check out a job this weekend. Floor tiling, porcelain, 600x600. Thing is the customer has asked me if i could tile directly over the existing floor which looks like old linoleum tiles, about 200x200. Tiles seem to be sound. Couldn't see any lifting. I think they are quite old tho'. About 30 years old maybe?

Is it possible to tile over these tiles? If so, what adhesive would you suggest? What dangers to look out for? Any advice/pointers would be appreciated?

I would rather take them up being so old and laying 600x600 would'nt want anything going wrong IMO. But if you decide to keep them down I would clean prime with sbr and use a spf

Best to take them up. If they come loose later on then the tiles will move !!!

All materials contract and expand differently thats why the use of spf, The tiles underneath could be under tension with the movement of the tile above thus causing problems later, Thats my theory anyway I know I'm going to rubbished on this one

Take em up your fixing will only be as good as the fixing of the vinyl tiles if they break down so will your fix. imo fix your job str8 to the original flooring ie concrete / screed w/e it may be.

They are probably Marley Tiles that were laid with bitumen, if they aren't moving now i doubt they will after you've laid the porcelain on them.
Bear in mind that they contain minute traces of asbestos, so if you are to remove them you'll need to take the necessary precautions.
    Good luck
