evening peeps,i have a question,my parents today purchased a solid polished slate hearth and a riven slate backplate for there fireplace, should this be sealed using a colour enhancer sealer?? they have been advised by the shop to spray it with wd40 as they said this makes it shiny but i told them they shouldnt do this, ive not worked with much stone/slate yet so any advice on how to treat it is ace ,,cheers

Re: polished slate
It depends on whether they want it to stay looking the same or if they want to enhance the colour and richness of the slate. Good quality slate tends not to accept much penetrative sealer but if you can get it to accept any it will be a bonus especially if they are running a real log or coal fire as it will help when the cinders/embers fall on the hearth with clean up. The only possible other solution is apply a topical sealer but if the slate is not riven finish then it will be difficult to get any topical sealer to adhere and it will need constant maintainance under those conditions.
I personally would use Aqua Mix Enrich & Seal if you want it enhanced or Aqua Mix Ultra Solve if you want it to stay the same. Others will say Lithofin Slate Sealer is very good and although it pains me to say its not bad. It depends on what you can get hold of
I would definately ignore the advice of WD40 but its your decision!!!
