    Put a movement joint where the floor breaks.......use either a preformed joint or use a cold joint...( silicone)......

    i would use ditra matting or similar as long as the wooden floor is sound and doesnt have any bounce in it {deflection} the ditra matting is ideal for this application you can stick it down with flooring adhesive and tile with cement based flexi adhesive gorut with flex grout and you will have a good floor

    If you have a break ( joint ) in a substrate...then you have to continue this joint through to the tiles , even if using Ditra....this is specified by schluter as well......

    Timber will expand and contract at a different rate to the concrete....The slightest amount of deflection will in time cause a failure at this point......

    so theres no way to use 12mm ply because there would be a step?

    12 mm of self leveling compounds too much IMHO

    mi self i would put grano chipping in the latex compound
