Default shower cubicle

Hi all, I have to tile my 1st shower cubicle in the next few weeks and was going to use the Bal wp1 shower kit for waterproofing the plasterboard walls. This will also be the 1st time using one of these kits.
I know the theory is for this to protect the wall behind the tile from water damage should it penetrate through the tile or grout , but could someone tell me if water is going through and the walls are sealed were does the water go if you have sealed your shower tray in ? Surely it can't just sit in behind the tiles. Hope this does not sound too stupid.
Cheers Ian

That is why you tank the walls to prevent this water ingression from damaging the substrate....it will sit there yes...but if correct adhesive is used then no harm can happen........and it is only a small amount of ingression and not like a flood is it..

Whitestar is a good dispersion adhesive but i would personally use a flexi cement based adhesive with a tanking system this offers better resistance to water ingression IMO......and quicker drying when the substrate has been water proofed......

How about this:

The tanking is not part of the day to day water proofing, it is a fail safe. The tanking is just a secondary ‘skin’. Water can cause very costly damage to a building in a very short time. If the water gets behind the tiles the worst that can happen is the tiles will fall off.

Householders should always have their grout/silicone maintained. Tell tale signs with normal glazed ceramics is slight darkening as the water is soaked up by the biscuit.

In most cases you would not know there is a problem but at least the plaster, wall, floor boards, joists, ceiling below, electrics etc are kept safe

Just to add to Daves post, as White Star, great adhesive though it is, dries by dispersion (evaporation) and you are putting a waterproof barrier between it and the plasterboard, which would have sucked out some of the moisture, it will take a long time to dry sufficiently (if at all if the tiles are large format) for you to grout it. Cement addy's set through chemical reaction so you are sure then that you have a proper "set" bed of adhesive to hold your tiles.

I would never use a tubbed adhesive over a tanked wall.

If your going to do it properly m8 get a tanking membrane off the roll and some decent tray seals like sealux. This will show you how :
