Tiling over stone wall with travertine

I have a bathroom to tile out to travertine. The external wall is exposed stone, very irregular and papered over and painted. Could any one suggest the best means of building the wall out to give a level finish to tile onto. Intending to use Benfer cement based adhesive. Would browning or sand / cement be ok - or another product. Probably going to be max 3inches deep at deepest point. Many thanks

yes the tiles are 450mm x 450mm 'artistic' honed and filled travertine, so quite heavy and in the past i have used benfer powdered cement buttering the back of the tile in addition to trowelling the wall. The wall itself is, as I mentioned, quarried stone probably 3ft thick with cavity -yorkshire dales location. Rather uneven and appears to be papered over and painted. height 2300mm width 2000mm with small recessed window in centre! need to bond well with wall given shear weight tiles will have - I am assuming the paper will pull away easily

After removing the paper it would be quicker to dry line the wall with plaster/backer board....

What are the rest of the walls like...will they hold the weight of the travertine.....?.

I think given your description of the substrate and the weight of the tiles I would be tempted to fix cement backer boards rather than to try and correct the walls. At least that way you will have a bang on true surface to tile to because with tiles that size you are going to have no leeway.

Thanks for the response.whitebeam and sir ramic - render to cement mix or browning? dave the rest of the walls are plasterboard over stud partition and in the past I have heavily screwed all verticals and horizontals to help support the extra weight what are your thoughts

I would use Gypliner and a tile backer. No need to strip the walls, very quick and more than capable of taking the weight. Anyone with a spirit level should be able to fit it quickly. No drying time to worry about either.

Just reread your post and saw your talking of 3 inchs at the deepes point, Then spirit is right gypliner would be your better option

Remove paper and paint. I possible I'd go with a render.
BAL do an excellent quickset render.
