Part-Time Tilers
Having just read a post from essexsi I was interested to see how many other workshy Fireman moonlight as tilers!?! But seriously, there seems to be a fair few people who tile part-time and may have useful knowledge from their main employment. Eg Gouters and his accountancy hotline.
I'll start the confessions...

Re: Part-Time Tilers
No there's nothing to stop me from working on my days off, same way anyone else could work in their evenings and weekends. Just most choose not to. I supose it's easier for us Firemen to do a bit of work as we do a lot of weekends leaving us with spare time during the week when no one else is about.
Fair play CJ I imagine two days tiling is a lot easier than one day being a dad!

Re: Part-Time Tilers
One of the biggest arguments we use to the big chains is that a lot of tilers do it as a second income.
We are trying to convince them there is room in the market for expensive equipment like Rubi, Armeg, Macrist. But also room for value for money tools too...
The responses you get back from them you would imagine they view every tiler as a full time, seven day a week career man doing hotel and airport jobs.
Still a lot of convincing to do... But I recon tiling as a second income is more common than they think.
Come on Travis-Perkins, Jewsons, PTS Plumbing, Woolsey Group, see the real info for yourselves....

A policeman freind used to come along on his days off to pass the time when not working. He used to call special constables for taking all his overtime while they did it for free.He retired at fifty and set up his own business tile fixing!!!

Did you think when you were using this man for cheep labour that he was going to work for you indefinitely? Maybe this is why you don’t like giving the trade secrets away. The Italians did that with terrazzo in the 60’s and 70’s they were afraid of the competition and that is what destroyed that industry. Personally I don’t mind the competition that’s why I teach. You should be proud to pass on the skills that will keep the trade alive.

Re: Part-Time Tilers
One of the biggest property developers’ in my area of Northumberland is a leading fireman. The plasterers, brickeys, tilers, roofers are all firemen. Infact he’s doing so well. He even donated the local life boat. But every respect to firemen they do a very skilled job and if they do a bit tiling part time good luck to them. The government should pay them more money like they deserve.

I applaud you firkin, like me your not afraid to air your views regardless of their popularity. It makes a refreshing change to see that these days.
The overwhelming opinion so far has been that this person is someone of low moral values and a person not to be trusted. Not quite the qaulitys of someone you want to leave alone in your house

Re: Part-Time Tilers
personally i only tile, and i do it full time, and i am too shattered do do anything else after a full day. But lots of people do 2 or 3 jobs to make ends meet, some of them happen to tile, some do bar work. and i think its ok. i would rather that, than if they stopped trying to make ends meet and and start living off the government.

Why don’t you look at it like this they are tilers that do something else part time? Then you may be able to get over your self.

Re: Part-Time Tilers
My problem is how many partime tilers declare their earnings are registered as self employed, insured etc not a lot thats for bloody sure.
pishes me of all these so called proffesional tilers "but I only do it part time" like its a hobby. Well I do it full time and it aint a hobby so sorry if I have pi ss ed you partimers of but my opinion and as a fulltimer I pay my VAT, my taxes my insurance and overheads and have to produce accounts if required how many of you do? very small number for sure.
And dont bother with I need to get x amount before I can give up my fulltime job well mates I need x amount and this is my fulltime job.
Rant over and its bloody monday

Re: Part-Time Tilers
Hi guys, i'm a full time police officer and do tiling part time on my days off. I have registered, insured, and declared etc. Not all part timers are bad news and do jobs on the cheap. i always price jobs as you normally would sqm or day rate. I do it to basically make ends meet and to make sure our wee girl has everything she needs now and for when she gets older. i would do if i could tiling full time as i enjoy it, but i would daft to give up my pention with the rozzers now!

That's an excellent way to go about it - and a shame too if you're not paid enough in your main job. I'm sure if you like the tiling though it's a nice break from the police work.

Re: Part-Time Tilers
As a police officer you should be paid more anyway the amount of crap you guys take, Have worked for a lot of policemen and women and have been a witness to some of the stress it can cause

Re: Part-Time Tilers
I think taking a pop at part time tilers over Tax & insurance is a bit unfair, granted there are many a***oles out there who give tradesmen a bad name but I think there a just as many cowboys out there working full time and doing bits for cash when it suits.
I also have full public liability insurance, an accountant, advertising costs and have the joy of a full time job ontop! I'm not bitching as I do the tiling through choice, when your in your 20's and have got a mortgage the size of mine you have to do something.
We can only hope that HM Revenue & Customs are doing their job properly, looking for thoe peolpe that make our lives harder by cheating the system... Not questioning every tax return that has claimed some laundry expences!
