Default Help with a quote...first one!

Just had my first call to go and give a quote. The guy has all the materials already as the previosu tiler has let him down. Needs old tiles stripped off first then its a kitchen splash back, 4m2 in total. Needs it done before Sat so i said i could do it on an evening or two. I was thinking £150 (days rate) is that about right? Not really sure how quick i will get old tiles off.

Hi Alib, day rate will be the way to go on a job like this. Just be aware that the tile removal will almost certainly end up resulting in remedial action to make the substrate ready to tile back on to. Have a good chat to your customer to make sure he is aware of that.

Being your first job, it will take you longer than you think probably. Don't charge too much on the basis of this though. You will need to bite the bullet and charge what it SHOULD take not how long it really takes.

Good luck. let us know how you get on.

If this is your first job then I would say your day rate may be a little high but its up to you . A tiler who tiles around 4m2 and grout would normally get between 80 and 100 . Make sure you quote states that if you need to prep then that will be extra, but its up to you mate good luck hope you get the job

I have to disagree with you here. Tilng a 4m2 kitchen splashback is not the same as tiling an 4m2 bare wall. There is no way I would only charge £80 to £100 for that. There are far too many fiddly little bits you need to take into account on a job like that.

I had simillar job a few weeks back, only thing was customer didnt know what he wanted ( or rather his wife didnt ) I quoted £125.00 day rate (3days) Expalined about the tiles, they had already removed a few to enable relocation of elec sockets etc. It was messy I explained to the customer that the rest of the wall would most probably end up like that and would need a skim. His wife was then keen to tile over the rest - but I advised against that as this would create problems around the door and windows. I didnt get the job .... but I think the customer wanted it done for next to nowt & didnt like the thought of paying for removal of tiles.

When you strip off old tiles, you will almost certainly pull half the wall off too. you might have to rip the lot out and replace the plasterboard. you won't know until you start though.
