| Odd question re: Bath Lighting | | Now I know this is way off the tiling game, but just wondered if anyone could help.
The bathroom I'm doing at the mo is having a new suite put in.
The owner would like some small LED lights to run along the bottom of the bath panel.
Has anyone seen and/or done anything like this before?
If so, any help, sources, tips, etc would be grately appreciated.
Thanks | | |

| Re: Odd question re: Bath Lighting | | We have sold hundreds of diamond drill bits to drill tiles out for spotlights and LED's VERY popluar.
We used to sell the lights as well but now we only sell diamond drill kits to bore the holes out.
Above is part of our porcelain tile display drilled out to fit 10 blue LED lights.
Can I suggest you buy the lights first. Make sure they are zone rated and then buy the drill to match the light.
The tolerences are VERRRYYY tight to fit these ( 1mm )
If in any doubt about mixing elecrics and water be sure to read and understand the zoning rating. LED lights should be 12V and safe.
This is a link to an INACTIVE link on our website giving more help and better details. Please note we no longer sell the lights. Zoning instructions link

| Re: Odd question re: Bath Lighting | | Thanks 365. Helpful as ever.
These LEDs are going into the bath panel so no tile drilling needed. BUT, what is IP?
Also, if you no longer sell these LEDs, any idea where I can get some from?
Thanks | | |

| Re: Odd question re: Bath Lighting | | Hi yes IP or Ingress Protection is a rating system for electrical equipment. More info can be found at this website ip ratings explained
In short you can not install certain equipment into bathrooms, wetrooms or areas where people are likely to come into direct or indirect contact with electrical components unless that equipment meets or exceeds the rating for the particular zone in the bathroom.
Bathrooms are divided into zones and you should check what you are installing.
If in any doubt check with a qualified electrician. Better still make sure only a qualified electrician installs and connects any appliance near a bath.
A bath is Zone zero and the plinth is zone one. Most low volt LED's will be 12v so are ok to be installed into a zone one area. But this is not advice or endorsement for you or any reader to fit / install LED's unless you are competent to do so.

| Re: Odd question re: Bath Lighting | | How reliable are these? I was in a tile showroom recently, and they had four LED lights, 1 was out, another was flickering. Also, when they fail, can they be changed?
Perhaps Fibre optic lighting would be more suitable (though expensive)?

| Re: Odd question re: Bath Lighting | | They last for 50,000 hours. Just how long is 50,000 hours?
50,000 hours lit for 24 hours per day will last over 5 and a half years.
50,000 hours lit for 12 hours per day will last for over 11 years.
50,000 hours lit for 8 hours per day will last for over 17 years.
50,000 hours lit for 4 hours per day will last for over 34 years.
Of course you can get other problems like cable fray, damage, short circuit, wear and tear, accidental damage and so on. The above conditions are "ideal" conditions.

| Re: Odd question re: Bath Lighting | | Yeah, manufacturer's specified average life is 50,000 hours, but as I mentioned, I've seen a few broken ones installed in tile outlets, so wondered what other people's experiences have been?
I guess if they used multiple smaller emitters in each light rather than just one, then even if one failed, it'd still look ok.
