    That was interesting

    Amazing how the "wooden racks" withstand 1070 degrees C.!!
    (They're tile cranks made from fireclay)

    These days the kilns are a single layer of rollers and the tiles are fired
    on the rollers ,so no cranks are needed.

    The strength of a tile comes from the fact that the biscuit(the body of the tile) contracts more than the glaze(Can't believe she called it paint).
    This puts the glaze into compression making the tile much stronger and
    resistant to crazing. If they get this wrong ,the tiles come out of the kiln like bananas.

    Amazing how they get from one end to the other without chipping / breaking, i wonder what their wastage rate is.
