Hi all, i've just been to quote a bathroom which the customer is wanting tiled in 300x480mm tiles in a brick effect. The bathroom itself is only 5ft by 7ft and a very awkward space and i don;t think that tiles this big would be right in that room, i think it's too small to look good, has anyone with more experience of brick effect tiling got any advice on what you think?
Have just done a bathroom using 300 x 600 in brickbond, only 1.9 m x 1.7 m At end of day it did look very good.A lot of cuts mind you so you will need to bear that in mind when costing the job.
large tiles in a small space do look good laid half bond but as yomper said hell of alot of work but price accordingly and remember to add your waste it will be the b******s
cheers lads. Wasn't sure coz i've never done a job in bickbond yet and i know that one was gonna come up sooner or later so i just wanna get as much info on it as i can
For tiles of that size, you best make sure the wall is flat! Any deviations get magnified up the larger the tile gets. Oh, and not wanting to tell granny how to suck eggs but you will use powder addy won't you?
no such thing as telling me how to suck eggs i'm always trying to learn what i don't know! Any help is greatly appreciated. Yeah i will be using that, teh woman had already bought tub stuff but i said she should change it. Is brickbond alot trickier than everyday normal tiling?
It is a little trickier in that you only have 1 straight line to follow on your row, i.e the horizontal row. Your vertical row you have a gap before you can keep track of your grout line (sorry PJ, joint!). Also you need to ensure where your cuts are going to be because really you don't want a full tile into the corners etc. Always best, imo, to try and have cuts on the 1/4 3/4 of the tile if possible. Windows need to be thought out just a wee bit. Also, try and carry the "visual" aspect round the corners to give the impression of a full tile "folded" around the corner.
these are the ones i have been doing just now plus a slate look floor
they are 600 x 300 wall tiles nightmare, there isnt a straight wall in the place lol just have to either skim the back with your wet cutter / grinder or pack lot and lots off adhesive on the wall
When asked, "Are large tiles ok in a small room"...my answer is a big yes, the bigger the format of tile the less grout joints, ergo the overall effect is not 'busy to the eye'. This then helps reduce the closed in look of the room, in fact it looks more spacious....Gaz
cheers gaz, i've sort of come round tot hatw ay of thinking myself i was thinking about it all night. Been to give them my price today so we'll see how it goes, thanks for the help!! reliable as always!!
