I am tiling the floor but they have another tiler for the walls
That job i am on at the moment will be having wall tiling over the weekend done by a friend of the home owner, apparently FOC. No problem on my account there but seeing as i have tiled a floor and the wall tiles are the same and i needed my Rubi 250 wet cutter to cut them ( Heavy porcelain). I am wondering how this tiler doing the walls will get on. from what i gather he doesnt drive and is quite elderly.
Now my Rubi is all set up and i am wondering if when he finds out how hard they are, will he ask to use my machine? Will i let him? Would you?
I may be thinking all these things without good reason but seeing as i will be working in the same house all weekend, i feel it could prove interesting one way or the other.
I am assumming he hasnt seen the tiles yet or the plastered walls ( yeah pretty bad).

That's a difficult one mate, depends how you get on with the customer and how much work you will get from the job. Only you cant decide on this one.

Re: I am tiling the floor but they have another tiler for the walls
difficult one-if you say anything it may be taken as rude towards the other chap.I would not let anyone use my kit-i may need it in the future!

Re: I am tiling the floor but they have another tiler for the walls
Well its my belief that you dont lend or borrow tools. I have paid big bucks for the tools so i feel he should too.
If you look at it this way though, I wasnt going to be working the weekend so my tools would not have been there and then he couldnt have used them anyway.
I am quite looking forward to seeing him at work, I really dont think he knows what he has let him self in for.

Re: I am tiling the floor but they have another tiler for the walls
Dont judge a book by its cover mate, the reason he dosent drive is that he runs every where, and he has tungsten false teeth and he bites the tiles...lol

Re: I am tiling the floor but they have another tiler for the walls
If he damages your cutter whos going to pay, I don't lend or borrow tools certainly not to someone who may not have the knowledge on how to use them, Not saying the other fella dos'nt. Thats through experience and it's allways cost me money.

nevermind damaging the cutter! wot if he damages himself not being trained or familiar with the machine...does your insurance cover you for amputations???...

Re: I am tiling the floor but they have another tiler for the walls
Well there is no way I would be lending my tools out to someone I don't know, but that is just my opnion mate. Could be more hassle than it's worth.

Re: I am tiling the floor but they have another tiler for the walls
I wouldn't allow him to use them. Firstly, there may be insurance issues, secondly, there is wear and tear on your machine - a cost that needs to be accounted for in your business accounts! Also the cost of teaching him out to use it and more than likely, supervison. Time is money!

Re: I am tiling the floor but they have another tiler for the walls
I totally concur with Dave if he is doing a tiling job then he should have the correct gear and as has been said i neither borrow nor lend tools at jobs.

Re: I am tiling the floor but they have another tiler for the walls
I totally agre with you Dave, actually i am looking forward to seeing what he can do....maybe i will be proved wrong about it all but ya know....I have one of those feelings about this. I will let you know what happens tomorrow night.

Re: I am tiling the floor but they have another tiler for the walls
I'd never leave my gear to be used by someone I didn't even know, and if the guy has not got the gear to do the job then he shouldn't be offering a F.O.C job to start with.

I think they might be asking you to tile it after the old timer decides that working with porc' FOC, was a big mistake.

Re: I am tiling the floor but they have another tiler for the walls
I'm pretty easy going,if it was someone I thought would be able to use my tools properly and would treat them with respect I MIGHT let them use them.
However I was on one bathroom showroom and one of the other guys didn't have a big enough cutter and he asked to use mine, this bloke had helped me do all the sorting of tiles and telling the contractors how we wanted things ready for us so since he helped me kind of I let him.
When I got it back it had addy all over it,I said how'd you manage to get it so dirty? he just said 'soz'.NO RESPECT
I only really lend tools I can afford to lose like screwdrivers and saws from now on unless its someone I trust.

The last time I lent tools to a "mate" they came back caked in adhesive too.
I told him to keep them as I couldn't use them any more :-(
Never ever again and certainly not my lovely new bridge saw!

Same thing has happened to me every time someone's borrowed something from me. Is it really that damn hard to keep tools clean, especially when they're not your's? I certainly don't think so. No respect for other's property, that's the issue here...

Re: I am tiling the floor but they have another tiler for the walls
its not really your problem
if this old timer is a true tradesman he,ll have his own tools

Re: I am tiling the floor but they have another tiler for the walls
Update....
Well the tiler (?) was 44 so not old! He never asked to borrow tools but he was only fixing 100mm tiles in the kitchen.....BUT.....no spacers, No trim anywhere, Out of level....but he was very clean
I showed him the shower room walls he will be tiling tomorrow, he didnt seem phased by it at all. Going by the work i have seen today from him, i think he will have a change of heart . He wont be priming the walls in the shower and his setting out is from the floor in 1st corner he comes to !!!! OMG.
No idea if he will use spacers ???
I will try and get pics in the morning.
