Terrazzo flooring

Been asked by a customer, if i can give an estimate for a terrazzo floor. Now i do know this comes in a seamless type or tile form, but thats about all i do know. I'm presuming the customer is on about the latter. Could someone give me a few bits of info on this type of tile and what fixing them entails
So i dont look a complete idiot, when i meet this customer.

Seamless is layed insitue then polished down,terrazzo tiles are layed in sand and cement,grouted and then left to dry then polished by a machine.

As you have asked the question i'm guessing you do not have the machinery to do the job and should pass it on to someone who specializes in terrazzo.

Honestly laying terrazzo is a totally diffrent animal than ceramics,slate e.t.c

there are several types of terrazzo flooring available at the moment, 1 . instu cast terrazzo where you screed the sub floor and put pvc or brass expansion trim into the screed, mix the terrazzo and then screed it into the panels you have created this then needs to be rolled out with a heavy roller as per tarmac to help the cement bond to the screed and to roll the air out of the mixture ,this is then covered over with wet blankets ,wet newspaper or polythene sheeting to slow the setting time down to cure it so to avoid cracking. once set you have to zombie the floor its called zombieing as you are there for hours with a rotary machine grinding the floor flat and bringing the marble chippings to the surface to achieve the look ,this is then allow to dry out further then sealed very time comsuming and only to be under taken by experts in fact terrazzo work has its own apprenticeship as far as i am aware 2. terrazzo tiling standard terrazzo tiles are between 40-60 thick and have a conctrete backing these are fitted on a sand and cement bed and are beaten home with a rubber mallet after the application of cement slurry on the bed ,again once dry they are grouted and ground down to give a unform flat finish .3 terrazzolux tiles these tiles are a thin terrazzo resin tile used alot in train stations etc and can be fitted with adhesive these tiles are 8-10mm thick and are not normally ground down

Going off the subject Phil, out of curiosity do you get many request's for these kind of specialist things in area's like Prestbury, Alderley Edge and Wilmslow?

No this is my first ever terrazzo enquiry, in prestbury though. Its normally travertine, limestone ect, in these areas. In fact the ceraic tiles i'm fixing this week, are the first in a couple of months or more.

I'd agree with the others: If you haven't worked with terrazzo before, pass it on. It's very different from "regular" tiling.

I would phone the comp up and tell them you are recommending them coz you don't do terrazzo and you never know they might return the favour if a small job comes up that suites you......just a thought.....
